Alaska, Here We Come!

Yesterday I signed a contract for a 4th grade teaching position in Pilot Station, Alaska, with the Lower Yukon School District. It sounds like a wonderful place, but it will definitely be a change of pace. It is off the road system, big time, and is only accessed by bush plane. The village has a population of 550, with about half of those people being under the age of 18. The population is also about 96% Yupik natives.

Here is where Pilot Station is on the map, in case you've never heard of it :)

It all happened very quickly, and within a matter of a few days I had been contacted (after previously interviewing about a month ago) and offered a contract that I had two days to sign. Of course, in all of my excitement, I signed it within 12 hours and it's already in the mail! I hope I don't regret that decision.

We fly to Anchorage on August 4th for an orientation to the culture, to surviving in the bush, and many other things I'm sure... From there we fly to Pilot Station, and the next week I have another orientation in Mountain Village which is another nearby village. We will be living in government subsidized housing that is already furnished and everything (thank goodness, I can't imagine flying a bed into a remote village in a mail plane...)

For now, it's incredibly hard to focus on my 1st graders and finish up my spring student teaching placement including my work sample and takeover (both of which I am in the middle of) with this in my very near future. It is even harder to focus on my SOU course work, when I am already feeling like such a REAL teacher!

With that being said, until school is out I probably won't have much time to update this blog unless I am procrastinating like I am right now...

-Until then!
